I’m wondering how you’re doing. I just want to catch up with you. Call me later.

Then, within seconds,

I love you!

To say that I was emotionally touched would be an understatement. Why would she express her heart to me on this ordinary morning? She had never done anything like this before. Does she know that I am in trouble and could die? I thought.

I looked at the message over and over with a lump in my throat as I felt her unconditional love for me. “I love you, too,” I said to myself.

April’s message made me realize how important my life was to my family. With her wakeup call, I opened the kitchen drawer and took out a pencil and notecard and wrote out my medical history, just in case I might not be conscious by the time I arrived in the emergency department. When I finished, still not thinking completely clearly, I made my way to the door to walk outside, but before I got to the door, I handed my wife, Cynthia, the notecard and said, “Get me to the hospital.”

Cynthia could tell from my demeanor that this was urgent. We made our way to the car and rushed to the emergency department. There I went right up to the reception desk and announced that I was having a stroke. My pronouncement set into motion a protocol that included emergency brain scans, blood tests, and the administration of medication to help thin my blood to prevent stroke progression. When there was a lull in the action, I reached for my phone and with fingers that I could finally coordinate, typed the following response to April:

I love you too.

I’ll talk to you later.

By the next morning, I was feeling much better, and most of the numbness had left my leg and face. As I was contemplating the events of the prior day, my sister April called.

“I’ve been very concerned about you. Cynthia called to let me know what happened.”

“What made you text me minutes after my stroke started yesterday morning?” I asked. “You never sent me a text before.”

“I couldn’t help myself,” she said. “I was overcome with an impression that I needed to text you with a message immediately, and I knew I needed to say something important. The only thing that came to my mind was, ‘I love you.’”

“That message brought me back to the reality of the situation and made me realize I was having a stroke. It probably prevented me from being permanently paralyzed. Thanks for saving me with your heart,” I said.

That experience happened three years ago, but our family has continued to be connected in ways that I cannot fully explain, transcending even life and death. I know that the common denominator is love. Love overcomes all. Love is the universal force. God is love (1 John 4:8).
